The Continued Competence (CC) Series is a collection of online training modules aimed to serve as professional development courses. The training modules cover a number of
specialized topics relevant to working with specific service providers or in specific settings.

The modules are open to everyone, and you can register by completing the application forms below and paying the associated fees built into the form.

Managing A Translation Business

This is a professional development module designed to provide freelance translators tips and strategies on how to start, manage and market a translation business. This course is designed to provide freelance translators with tips and strategies on how to start, manage and market a translation business.
The online course is approximately 12 instructional hours (2-3 hours per module), plus an additional 1 hour from students to complete the course quiz. Upon completion of this 5 module course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and complete steps needed to start a translation business
  • Understand the difference of working as a staff or as a freelance translator
  • Identify career resources and options available
  • Define and execute steps in a standard translation project workflow

Avts: Introduction To Audiovisual Translation - Subtitling

This is a professional development course designed to provide freelance translators with the information about various forms of audiovisual translation, focusing on practicing principles and strategies used in subtitling.

This online course is approximately 5 instructional hours (1-2 hours per module), plus an additional 1 hour for students to complete the course quiz and 5 hours on average to complete the subtitling project. Upon completion of this 3-module course, students will be able to:

  • Distinguish between modalities of audiovisual translation in regards to principles, constraints and translation strategies
  • Have a clear understanding of the work methods, skills and strategies required in professional translation for subtitling, and
  • Apply work methods and strategies discussed to the translation of subtitles

This is a professional development course designed to provide freelance translators with the opportunity to look at the field of transcription, its different types and purposes as well as to practice transcribing audio/video recordings using different types of transcription guidelines.

This online course is approximately 3 instructional hours (1.5 hours per module), plus an additional 1 hour for students to complete the course quiz and 5 hours on average to complete the transcription project. Upon completion of this 2-module course, students will be able to:

  • Have a better understanding of similarities and differences between monolingual and cross-lingual transcription and the role of the translator providing them
  • Apply your knowledge of general requirements for providing transcription services in your transcription practice.

The online course is approximately 4 instructional hours (2 hours per module), plus an additional 1 hour for students to complete the course quiz and 4-5 hours on average to complete the localization project. Upon completion of this 2 module course, students will be able to:

  • Understand its relationship to translation and the role of the translator in localization
