In addition to providing language services, MCIS is Canada’s biggest provider of interpretation and translation training, training over 460 interpreters every year. Through our training programs, aspiring language professionals can develop the skills and knowledge that are needed to work as an interpreter, translator, or other language professional in Canada and internationally. In this blog, we will take a closer look at MCIS’s interpreter/translator training programs and explore the benefits they offer.
Online Interpreter Training Programs
MCIS offers several Interpreter training programs ranging from our core interpreter training to advanced training options for legal and medical settings to continued competence series for interpreters working in different contexts.
Whether you are new to the field of interpreting or are already a seasoned interpreter, you will find a course that matches your training needs.
The Online Language Interpreter Training (OLIT) offered by MCIS is designed to help individuals develop the necessary skills to become professional interpreters. It covers a range of topics that teach fundamental interpreting skills including modes of interpretation, ethical principles, constituent tasks of interpretation, and coping tactics for interpreting in different settings.
This language-neutral program comprises 120 hours of training on vocabulary development and interpreting skills in addition to extensive interpreting practice. Our solid training process produces high quality and responsive interpreters dedicated to service excellence. The completion of this program requires a language assessment test (ILSAT or CILISAT) to become a professional community interpreter.
OLIT will benefit individuals fluent in speaking and reading two or more languages and wish to use their skills to serve their language communities.
Students graduate from the program with the skills and knowledge necessary to work as interpreters in a variety of settings, including the legal, medical, and social services sectors. Graduates also can join MCIS’ roster of interpreters which provides them with access to job opportunities and ongoing professional development.
Online Translator Training Programs
The core and continued competence translator training programs offered by MCIS are designed and catered to help individuals develop the skills and knowledge needed to work as professional translators.
The Online Translator Training Program (OTTP) covers a range of topics including developing translation competence, using translation technology, community, and introduction to medical and legal translation.
One of the key benefits of this program is the opportunity for trainees to gain practical experience through translation assignments and self-reflection. Trainees are also provided with language-specific feedback from experienced translators for the final assignment.
