Bridging Language, Culture, and Care: Sandra Flores’ 19‑Year Journey in Community Interpreting

By: Yazmin Alejandre

Introduction: More Than Words—A Lifelong Commitment to Understanding

Community interpreting is about much more than converting words from one language to another. It is about building trust, navigating culture, and ensuring equitable access to essential services—especially in healthcare and community settings where every interaction matters.

With nearly two decades of experience, Sandra Flores embodies the professionalism, empathy, and dedication that define high‑quality language access. Certified through CILISAT/ILSAT, Sandra has spent 19 years bridging language and culture in meaningful, life‑changing ways—supporting individuals, families, and communities when clarity and understanding matter most.

At MCIS Language Solutions, we are proud to highlight professionals like Sandra, whose work reflects the heart of community interpreting.

A Career Rooted in Experience, Ethics, and Continuous Learning

Over her 19‑year career, Sandra Flores has intentionally strengthened her practice through specialized training in medical and community interpretation, recognizing that professional growth is essential in an ever‑evolving healthcare and social services landscape.

Her professional development includes advanced coursework and training from respected institutions such as:

  • Des Moines University
  • MCIS Language Solutions
  • The Centre for Education and Training

Sandra has focused her learning on complex and high‑impact subject areas, including:

  • Medical terminology
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes education
  • Health care interpreting
  • Sexual violence and human trafficking awareness
  • HIPAA compliance for interpreters

This depth of training equips her to navigate sensitive, high‑stakes conversations with accuracy, professionalism, and cultural awareness—skills that are essential in both healthcare and community settings.

Interpreting in Healthcare: When Accuracy and Trust Matter Most

Healthcare interpreting is one of the most demanding areas of language services. Interpreters must understand clinical terminology, follow strict protocols, and support emotionally charged conversations—all while maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards.

Through years of specialized training and hands‑on experience, Sandra has developed the expertise to:

  • Interpret across diverse healthcare encounters
  • Apply medical protocols and procedures accurately
  • Navigate ethical and cultural complexities
  • Support clear communication between patients and providers

This level of readiness reflects the importance of advanced interpreter training, such as MCIS’s Advanced Medical Interpreter Training (AMIT), which prepares language professionals for real‑world healthcare environments.

At MCIS, we believe that well‑trained interpreters are essential partners in delivering equitable, patient‑centered care.

Creativity, Nature, and Balance Beyond the Profession

Behind every skilled interpreter is a whole person—one who brings creativity, curiosity, and balance into their life beyond assignments. Outside of her professional work, Sandra enjoys painting on a variety of mediums, including rocks, canvas, and wood—using creativity as a way to recharge and express herself. She also finds inspiration in Ontario’s natural landscapes, frequently exploring nature trails and coastal areas such as Lake Huron, Southampton, and Kincardine. These moments in nature provide reflection and grounding—an important balance in a profession that often involves emotional labour.

Having lived in the Greater Toronto Area for 40 years, Sandra considers it home, while always remaining curious about what’s next. One of her favorite local traditions includes stopping by Betty’s in the Niagara region for a memorable meal whenever she gets the chance.

Looking Ahead: Language Learning as a Lifelong Journey

Even after nearly two decades in the field, Sandra continues to look ahead with curiosity and ambition.
On her professional bucket list:

  • Learning Portuguese
  • Learning Italian
  • Pursuing additional language certifications

This commitment to lifelong learning reflects a core truth of community interpreting: language access is dynamic, and professional interpreters must grow alongside the communities they serve.

At MCIS, we are proud to support interpreters who see learning not as a requirement, but as an ongoing journey.
