Empowering Voices: How MCIS Language Solutions Helped Transform Lives at Homeless Connect Toronto 2024

As the chill of winter approaches, the challenges faced by individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness become even more acute. For those without stable housing, the colder months can be a time of immense hardship. That’s why Homeless Connect Toronto 2024, held on October 27, 2024, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, was particularly vital.

At MCIS Language Solutions, our mission goes beyond providing interpretation and translation services. As a social purpose-driven enterprise, we aim to use the power of language to create meaningful change and foster inclusion. Hence, we were honored to play a significant role in this transformative event, contributing our expertise in interpretation and translation services to help ensure no one was excluded from accessing the essential resources they desperately need.

About Homeless Connect Toronto

Since 2013, Homeless Connect Toronto has coordinated “one-stop-shop” events that bring critical services under one roof for individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Modeled after San Francisco’s Project Homeless Connect, which began in 1998 and has since been adopted by over 221 communities in North America, the initiative has become a lifeline for thousands in Toronto.

At Homeless Connect Toronto 2024, service providers delivered a wide range of critical resources, including:

  • Clothing and winter gear to help prepare for the cold months ahead.
  • Haircare and eye care to restore dignity and well-being.
  • Dental care and healthcare services to address immediate needs.
  • Meals to provide nourishment and comfort.
  • Legal aid and ID clinics to navigate bureaucratic challenges.
  • Housing assistance to take steps toward stability.

This holistic approach ensures that guests leave the event with more than hope—they leave with tangible support.

A Collective Effort to Serve

Homeless Connect Toronto is a cornerstone event that brings together housing support, employment services, health care, and other critical resources under one roof. This year, the event reached new heights, uniting 322 service providers from 67 organizations and a record-breaking 339 volunteers to serve over 1,240 guests.

MCIS Language Solutions was honored to be part of this extraordinary effort, contributing to the event’s success in meaningful ways.

Our Contributions

  • Interpretation Services: With 12 MCIS interpreters on-site and access to remote interpretation services in over 300 languages, MCIS ensured that no guest was excluded due to language barriers. Guests could communicate effectively and access resources through both in-person interpretation and immediate telephone services, reinforcing inclusivity and equity.
  • Volunteer Team: A team of 10 dedicated employees from MCIS, alongside some of their children, volunteered their time to assist at the event. Their commitment exemplifies the values of compassion and community embedded in our organization’s culture.
  • Leadership Representation: Our Executive Director and several board members also attended, reinforcing MCIS’s commitment to driving social impact from the top down.

Together, our team worked hand-in-hand with service providers and other volunteers to deliver seamless, accessible services for the attendees.

Bridging Gaps and Transforming Lives

One of the most pressing challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness is the inability to access services due to language barriers. At Homeless Connect Toronto, MCIS was there to change that. By enabling clear communication between guests and service providers, we helped attendees secure housing support, navigate healthcare systems, and explore employment opportunities—steps that are critical to improving their circumstances.

Our interpreters and remote services empowered guests by giving them a voice and ensuring they were heard, regardless of the language they spoke.

A Family Effort

This year’s event was particularly special as we witnessed the next generation of change-makers in action. Several of our employees brought their children to volunteer, teaching them the importance of compassion and community engagement. Their energy and enthusiasm added a heartwarming touch to the day, reminding us that social impact begins at home.
